Why Populations Count - NZ

How does global overpopulation affect us here in New Zealand?

Picture
NZ is known for its wide open spaces, its idyllic empty coastlines and stunning natural scenery so why should we be worried about increasing global populations elsewhere in the world? After all, NZ has one of the lowest population densities in the developed world.

Even though we may be geographically isolated from the rest of the world, we  are now very much a part of a global community where what happens on one side of the planet impacts on the other side. It is only a matter of time before the impact of increasing global population will be felt here in NZ.

As populations increase worldwide, so will the demand for the basics - food, water and space - all things that New Zealand has ample of - for now.

We are already starting to feel the impact of increasing population size on an inadequate infrastructure in our major cities while other issues such as urban sprawl, diversion of natural waterways for agriculture and climatic changes are impacting in some of our most isolated and untouched environments. We also have one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the developed world and one of the highest rates of child abuse. These are not facts that we can ignore.

Do we want to follow the trend of other countries and slowly lose what we once held to be so precious? Or do we want to lead by example and start making positive changes?

A Small Country Uniting for big Causes

Picture
NZ is a world leader in taking united stands for positive change. We led the world with our fight to ensure womans right to vote, our stand against apatheid during the Springbok tour, and keeping NZ nuclear free.
When we see global issues which impact on a persons freedom to make choices, we make the right choice and take a strong stand - and other countries have followed our lead.

The global issue of over population affects us all and needs urgent discussion and urgent changes. Lets lead by example and unite for this biggest cause of all - lets start talking about the elephant in the room - over population.
